About Cozumel

It is the third-largest island and the second most populated island in Mexico. The UNESCO included is a part of the world network of biosphere reserves. It is famous for its beautiful Cenotes and 22 kilometers of white beaches where every year divers and tourists take part in aquatic activities where they can rejoice in the unique beauty of the second largest coral reef and varied wildlife. 
 

Cozumel has many archeological remains and eco-touristic activities that take place in the beautiful turquoise waters unique to the island. Here you can snorkel, dive, drive around in a motorcycle, rent a canoe, kayak, have fun on various zip-lines, learn how to rappel, surf, kitesurf, windsurf, discover the depths of the sea in a submarine and visit many parks.

General Information

The Mayan Ruins of San Gervasio 

The Mayans were great builders and merchants; a lot of merchandise arrived in Cozumel by canoe. During the conquest, the Spanish exploited de island and brought many diseases that killed many of the islanders. Many natives were killed, and their religion and customs erased; this forced the remainder to flee. The island became a center of operations for pirates in the Caribbean.

These ruins are on top of a freshwater mantle, which helped the Mayans survive. Along with the ruins, you can walk on white trails of sac be that lead to architectonic ensembles. 

Ixcel Sanctuary

Ixcel is the Goddess of love and fertility who is connected to nature, health, crops, and peace. The mayan considered the island her home and built many temples in her honor. Future brides would travel in canoes from Xaman Ha now Playa del Carmen or from Puerto de Pole- now Xcaret. Cozumel is a magical place for those in love. 

El Cedral

It was the first Mayan settlement in Cozumel, built in the year 800 after Christ, in this region the Mayans built 36 cities. These ruins have traces of stucco and paint. You can access El Cedral from Playa San Francisco. 

For more than 170 years, from April 29th to May 3d, the traditional Santa Cruz celebration takes place. There are typical dances such as the Pig's Head dance, music, a fair, regional foods, cockfights, rodeos, horse rides, and much more.

El Faro Celerain Cozumel 


In 1934 the naval military wanted to rescue the iron lighthouse made by Eiffel House because of the corrosion; this wasn't possible, so instead, they built one of reinforced concrete with metallic rings. The lighthouse has 133 steps, and from there, you can have a panoramic view of Cozumel.
 

There is a legend that says that in 1950 a banana boat crashed at the feet of the lighthouse and the owner traveled to Cozumel to rescue it, he realized the beauty of the island and on arriving back to the United States wrote an article for Holiday magazine, and this triggered a boom in tourism for the island. 

Cozumel Carnaval 

The Carnaval of Cozumel is one of the oldest and most important in México. There is a diverse mix of cultural expressions such as dancing, costumes, and floats, from the Peninsula and the Caribbean. 
 

This festivity evokes joy, and every year it represents Mexico in the top 10 carnivals of the country. 

Cenotes - Chechon- Chempita- Jade 

There are many beautiful cenotes on the island, the Chechón, Jade and Chempita Cenote, to mention a few. You can access them by bicycle and some by jeep. It is recommended to use biodegradable and eco-friendly sunblock and to avoid leaving trash in the sites.

The most beautiful beaches of the Caribbean island have white sand, and turquoise water where you can dive, snorkel, swim, fish, and do many other aquatic activities.
